The process
The cancellation can take place in a period of 7 days before, but must be carried out within 14 days after the move-out.
To deregister, you must fill out a deregistration form. and a landlord confirmation form (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung, Vermieterbescheinigung or Auszugsbestätigung in German) signed by your landlord, to deregister. These forms need to be sent to the registration office.
Landlords are required to sign the landlord confirmation every time a new tenant moves in or moves out. If you cannot get your landlord to sign the form, please contact your local registration office for assistance.
Confirmation of deregistration
You will not receive confirmation of your deregistration by default, you must specifically request a deregistration confirmation (Abmeldebescheinigung). If you do this, you should receive a confirmation of deregistration within 5 – 10 days via snail mail. Alternatively, you can call the registration office and they will tell you if your deregistration was successful or not.
